Located in a verdant valley, Saint Guilhem le Désert is a small medieval village renowned for its rich historical heritage, natural beauty, and peaceful and charming ambiance. The village takes its name from Guilhem, a nobleman from the 9th century who lived as a hermit in the region and founded a religious community. Saint Guilhem le Désert is also famous for its abbey, the Abbey of Gellone, founded in the 9th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, including the Hérault Gorges, a spectacular and wild canyon that’s perfect for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The crystal-clear waters of the Hérault are also a popular swimming spot in the summer.
Saint Guilhem le Désert is also known for its artisanal crafts, particularly the production of traditional pocket knives. Visitors can discover this local craftsmanship in the many craft shops in the village. Finally, Saint Guilhem le Désert is a place of pilgrimage for hikers and pilgrims who travel along the famous Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James). Pilgrims can rest and recharge in the village before continuing their journey towards Compostela
